“I wrote the lyrics to this song at the height of the Irish abortion debate in 2017/18. As some of you may know, I’ve lived in Ireland for many years, where I was a pro-choice activist and often volunteered with groups like the Abortion Rights Campaign.
Activism can take many forms, from canvassing to marching the streets with banners to art. As a woman in an extreme metal band who uses her voice in an extreme way, I felt it was my responsibility to not just sing about it, but scream about it.
It is my duty to be the voice of anger and frustration for those who have to travel, risking a prison sentence, in order to obtain reproductive health services they deserve. Those who can’t travel, and are being forced to unwanted pregnancy. Those with a myriad of unique circumstances, heartbreaking stories, tragic experiences. Those who were treated like a vessel.
While some societies do evolve towards humanism and empathy, like the Irish May 2018 referendum showed, it pains me to see some of the so called “first world” countries actually taking a massive step back in this day and age. Let this be an anthem for you. Don’t give up. Keep educating others. Keep the conversation going. We will not be silenced.”
